Yesterday I found the culprit for my leaky differential. Those cracks are definitely not supposed to be there! Getting the axle out of the diff was pretty easy as well as getting the new seal in. But putting everything back in took a bit of work but still didnt take too long. I put in the new Redline Gl-5 spec 75w-90 fluid and then moved onto swapping the gear oil in the transmission. Well the fill plug for that managed to stump me for well over an hour!
Some bright minded ugga dugga fiend must have driven the plug all the way into the hole because it was damn near impossible to get out. Those threads are not supposed to be that f’d up nor is it supposed to be so rounded. The fact that it was a square bolt (supposed to be that way for some god forsaken reason) made it that much harder to get a hold of the damn thing. But the real culprit was just threading it in all the way. That plug only needs to go in about 3/4 of the way to be secure. Not quite sure why but it was ALL the way in so my life was hell just getting it loose with vice grips. Eventually I got it out though and evacuated the nice brown gross old fluid in there. Redline GL-4 spec MT-90 swapped in and now the car shifts even nicer! I still have to put in turret fluid but this is already leagues better than where it started. I am sure once I really test it out with some heat in the trans, then it will shine even more. From what I read MT-90 is not really ideal for primarily street driven miatas because it needs heat to really work. But on track it should lead to much smoother shifting for sure.
Due to the struggles with the fill plug, I didnt get around to swapping on my other midpipe that I wanted to do nor get started on freeing my screwed up caliper. But at least I have made some progress! Next up will be fixing said caliper, replacing rotors, putting in the track pads, fuel pump replacement (need to order an OEM pump), and then radiator upgrade. The to-do list has actually gotten longer but that tends to be how those work anyways.
At least the plus side of that maintenance job taking so long was that the hike I did after got me a really nice sunset view instead of just being a grueling climb for a quick workout.

Is GL-5 safe for the rear end. I used it in a steering box I rebuilt and let sit on my bench for a year and since there were brass parts the oil came out sparkely.
I didn’t have a chance to try the MT90 but did find ford manual transmission fluid xt-m5-qs to work great especially when the car was cold.

I believe you can find a replacement for that plug in the gas (or galvanized) pipe section of your hardware store. 8-point sockets are good for tough square plugs but are just about unobtainium nowadays.

GL-5 is not safe for the transmission (too slippery) but it is spec d for the LSD in this car. There is much debate about what brand of fluids to use for both but the GL4/GL5 thing is pretty solid rules from Mazda. I had originally looked for the Ford “unicorn tears” but just found it easier to purchase Redline. The car will primarily see track use and hard canyon driving anyways. Plus it is never cold in ambient temperatures around here (dont need to run any useful amounts of antifreeze) so I shouldnt have troubles. So far it’s just “kinda nice” but I am sure with heat, it will be “really nice”.

I’d wonder if I can just find a plug with a standard 6 point head on it. That would be a better solution. But yeah otherwise next time I change the fluid I would like to get one that is at least not abused to hell and then buy an 8 point to suit it. I was able to clean the threads and install it properly with a 9/16 box end wrench. It is the fill plug anyways so its only preventing dirt from getting in and sloshing fluid from escaping. So it definitely had no need in being jammed in so tightly.

I have a set
similar to these:

I went to change the trans fluid on mine, bu t it came out pristine so I capped it back up and left it. But it probably is the 90, because I need about 5 minutes before it’s smooth. Then it’s great

I’ve run MT-90 in a street miata. It isn’t ideal, but it works well once its up to temp. Shifting can be on the notchy side of things on a 20 degree morning.

Miata axles can be pretty easy. The only bit that people get h ung up on is the c-clip on the diff side of the axle not seating.
I also love the little trick to leave the lower control arm unbolted then just swing ‘em in.

A cold day here would be 20 also, but in Celcius lol. So that means things should be fine. I want the car to be as track focused as possible anyways.

Yup, I was hung up on that for a bit. It just took a bit of ramming to get it into place finally. The thing is just awkward and kinda heavy so it took a bit to get it just right. I also never do well with things that require “some gusto” to get it going. Same trouble with rotors that are stuck on, I hate just beating the hell out of things out of fear of breaking something.

That actually doesnt have the right size anyways. All of those male square ones wouldnt be useful either . It was just the 9/16" female from the other set that would have done the trick.

I gradually step up the beating. Worst thing was a stuck ball joint that required a second pickle fork to get out the pickle fork that got stuck in while trying to get it out.

Agreed, if only Mazda followed the rules. I think they updated their fluids for the newer cars and say they are backwards safe without really doing so. I remember them selling me their GL-5 for the transmission and I had to return it. Ford dealer had the fancy fluid for about $20 a quart so it was worth it. Instead of antifreeze, do you use a water wetter type of replacement to keep the lubricity without worrying about spilling antifreeze on the track?

Nice work!
I have MT90 in the trans of the RX7. It made a huge difference compared to the whatever-was-in-there-before and definitely gets better once warmed up.

Yup, just have water and water wetter in the rad right now. I have thought about adding a little bit of coolant but reading into it, redline does not recommend using any antifreeze if you dont need it for freeze protection.
